Indonesian Film Laut Bercerita Premieres in Busan Ahead of October 29 Cinema Release

BUSAN, South Korea — Indonesian film Laut Bercerita (The Sea Speaks Its Name), adapted from the bestselling novel by Leila S. Chudori, received applause at its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival on October 11.

Directed by Yosep Anggi Noen, the film explores enforced disappearances, the struggle for justice and the courage of young people challenging the status quo. It is competing in the festival’s main competition programme.

Starring Reza Rahadian, Yunita Siregar, Eva Celia and Christine Hakim, the film also portrays families waiting for the return of loved ones who have disappeared.

Director Yosep Anggi Noen said the Busan screening offered an opportunity to introduce Indonesian cinema to international audiences.

“I hope we can continue to find hope and never forget those who have always fought for change,” Yosep said in a statement released in connection with the premiere.

Reza Rahadian, who plays the lead character Biru Laut, said he hoped the film would encourage younger audiences to think critically and find the courage to speak out.

The film will close the 2026 Jakarta Film Week on October 25 before opening in cinemas across Indonesia on October 29. The production team said tickets for the Jakarta Film Week screening had sold out.

Producer Gita Fara said the story of families waiting for the return of missing loved ones could resonate with audiences across national borders.

Laut Bercerita is based on Chudori’s novel of the same name. The screenplay was written by Chudori and Yosep Anggi Noen. The film was produced by Pal 8 Pictures with support from several production partners.

Its appearance at Busan comes as Indonesian filmmakers seek to expand the international reach of their work through film festivals. (Aiko Rama Khasan)
