Indonesia Sends 638 Troops to Congo as UN Peacekeeping Mission Continues

JAKARTA, STUPA NEWS — Indonesia has deployed 638 military personnel to the Democratic Republic of Congo to take part in a United Nations peacekeeping mission under MONUSCO, the Indonesian military said on Tuesday.
The troops are part of the Indonesian military's Rapid Deployment Battalion Task Force, known as Garuda Contingent 39-H MONUSCO. They will support peacekeeping efforts and the protection of civilians in line with the UN mandate.
Lieutenant General Bobby Rinal Makmun, the Indonesian military's assistant for operations, represented the military commander at a departure ceremony held at the military headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.
In remarks delivered by Bobby, the military commander said the troops should maintain a high level of readiness as security conditions in the mission area remained dynamic.
"The dynamic security situation in the mission area requires every soldier to maintain a high level of readiness, discipline and professionalism," the military commander said.
The troops were also instructed to carry out their duties in accordance with the UN mandate, standard operating procedures and rules of engagement, while respecting human rights and international humanitarian law.
The deployment is part of Indonesia's contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and reflects the country's participation in international efforts to maintain peace and security.
MONUSCO is a UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo focused on protecting civilians and supporting conditions for peace and stability in the country. (Gusti Haes)
