Indonesian Police Teach High School Students to Use AI to Spot Hoaxes

 

WONOSOBO, Indonesia, Aug 11 (STUPA NEWS) - Police in Indonesia's Central Java province have taught more than 300 high school students how to use artificial intelligence critically, including as a tool to help identify misleading information and hoaxes circulating online.

The training, organised by the Wonosobo district police under a programme called "Paham AI", was held on Tuesday at the Patriot Sports Hall of State Senior High School 2 Wonosobo.

Police personnel introduced students to commonly used AI applications, including ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, and stressed that the technology should be treated as a tool to assist human activities rather than replace human judgement.

The students were also shown how AI could be used to analyse information, summarise news reports and identify potentially questionable content.

Police cautioned, however, that AI-generated information still needed to be checked against official and reliable sources before being trusted or shared.

The training also covered ethical and security risks associated with AI, including the creation and distribution of false information, plagiarism and the sharing of personal or sensitive data with AI systems.

Students were introduced to basic prompt-writing techniques, with police explaining that clear and specific instructions could produce more relevant responses from AI systems.

The programme is part of efforts by the Wonosobo police to promote digital literacy among young people, with the training combining the use of AI with lessons on information verification, online safety, ethics and legal responsibility.

The event was held in a controlled and orderly manner, police said.
