House Commission X Seeks Clarity on Implementation of Republic of Indonesia University Plan

STUPA ■ JAKARTA — Indonesian House of Representatives Commission X member Juliyatmono said on Monday the commission is awaiting an official explanation from the government regarding the planned establishment of the Republic of Indonesia University (Universitas Republik Indonesia/URI), following growing public debate over the proposal.

Juliyatmono said Commission X has not yet discussed the initiative because lawmakers are currently in recess and have not received a formal briefing on the university's concept or implementation plan.

"Commission X has not yet received an explanation because we are still in recess. At the appropriate time, we will request a comprehensive briefing on various aspects of the URI proposal," Juliyatmono told reporters during a recess event in Karanganyar, Central Java.

The Golkar Party lawmaker said the commission would seek clarification on the university's objectives, functions, and implementation framework before taking a position. He said the idea appeared constructive in principle, but its execution would require careful scrutiny.

Beyond the URI proposal, Juliyatmono said Commission X is currently prioritizing revisions to Indonesia's education regulations, including efforts to ensure equal treatment for public and private educational institutions from primary schools to universities.

He also emphasized the need to improve teachers' welfare, strengthen legal protection for educators, and ensure the constitutional mandate allocating 20% of the national budget to education is clearly reflected in legislation.

The government has announced plans to establish the Republic of Indonesia University, but has yet to publicly disclose detailed information on its institutional structure or implementation mechanism. (Harun S)
